Grand Chess Meeting

Thursday 9th October 1851

The following is the text of the report in the Lincoln, Rutland, and Stamford Mercury of 17th October 1851.

Caistor.- Grand Chess Meeting.- This usually dull town was considerably enlivened on Thursday the 9th inst. by the arrival of a numerous company of the elite of this neighbourhood and several gentlemen from the adjoining counties, who had congregated for the purpose of holding a grand chess meeting.  The eminent people who were present on this interesting occasion contributed in no small degree, by the degree of their skill and profound acquaintance with the mysteries of this antique and highly interesting game, to invest it with much importance.  A splendid dinner was provided in the large room at the Red Lion inn, after which Saml. Newham, Esq., was unanimously elected to the chair.  The usual loyal toasts were drank [sic] and responded to, and several eloquent and appropriate addresses were delivered.  The president was supported by the Rev. A somewhat differently worded report listing the same people appeared in the Doncaster, Nottingham, and Lincoln Gazette of Friday 17/01/1851, the text being as follows:
