Doncaster, 50 Brunswick Terrace.jpg

50 Brunswick Terrace, Bennetthorpe, Doncaster (to right of centre, with black paint).

1850-51 Mayor of Doncaster George Johnson lived at Brunswick Terrace for over 20 years.  This George Johnson seem the only plausible candidate for the identity of the “G. Johnson” who attended the 1850 West Yorkshire Chess Association meeting in Leeds, beng described as treasurer of Doncaster chess Club.

Only latterly, around 1861, was there any reference to a house number, but if we assume he didn’t move around different addresses in the Terrace, then it was at number 50 that he lived for over 20 years.

The name “Bennetthorpe” is evident at the left.  In George Johnson’s day this was spelt as two words, “Bennet Thorpe”.  The name “Brunswick Terrace” is not now evident anywhere along the length of the terrace.
