Yorkshire Extract of December ECF Ratings

(see here for list)

The 1st December monthly ratings have been published.  The number of players in this “Yorkshire” list has increased by 72 as compared with October’s list, less than the 129 the increase from October to November.  The month-on-month increases are slowing down now that we are a reasonable way into the new winter league season.  The are even shades of decline appearing – probably another aspect of the arrival of the winter league season.

October and November saw a spurt in the increase of P-category players, presumably attributable to post-Covid returners diving back into league chess.  That surge in P-category players has effectively ceased.  In an equilibrium state, new players would enter the ranks at P category, while in roughly equal numbers earlier P-category players would “upgrade” to K category, so stabilising the number of P-category players.  The December list includes only 2 extra P-category players in total.  One is a York player whose games had hitherto been erroneously attributed to a namesake in the North East.  The other is the present writer who having played in a Silver Rook match now has a rating of 1796P.  Magnus Carlsen would have got received exactly the same rating had he been in the writer’s shoes after not playing for 3 years and 8 months!  (A 1796 rating translates to a 146 grade which was about the writer’s grade about 55 years ago!)

An interesting decrease in the December list is that of standard-rate A-category players, down from 249 to 237.  This is not easy to explain convincingly.
