Clash of Junior Event Dates
The weekend of 9th & 10th of July 2022 sees two junior events of national relevance occurring at the same time, namely the Northern Megafinal of the UK Chess Challenge (UKCC) held in Manchester (on 9th & 10th), and the finals of the English Junior Coaches and Organisers Association (EJCOA) national youth championships held in Nottingham (from 8th to 10th). This is not quite so great a clash when one bears in mind that the UKCC event is a rapid-play one, whereas the EJCOA one is played at standard. Nevertheless, the clash is a pity, but of course finding suitable dates and then finding suitable venues for those dates is often a difficult challenge for organisers.
One outcome of the clash is that 3 players who qualified from the UKCC York Megafinal to play in the Manchester Gigafinal are actually playing in the EJCOA final, whereas they might have liked to play in both. More humorously, one player was down as an entrant in both events! Results from round 1 of the EJCOA event make it evident he did not appear there, so will presumably be playing in Manchester.
Overall, the Manchester Gigafinal has 371 entrants (at the last count) of whom 27 are Yorkshire players, while the Nottingham EJCOA event has 145 entrants of whom 3 are Yorkshire players.
On top of all that, there is a one-day junior event taking place in Sheffield on Saturday 9th July 2022.
