FIDE Candidates Tournament

 

The FIDE Candidates Tournament in the current World Championship cycle is being held from 16 June to 5 July 2022 at the Palacio de Santona, Madrid.  The dramatis personae are

The 8 Candidates play a double-round all-play-all tournament to determine the next challenger to the reigning World Champion, Magnus Carlsen.  Round-by-round coverage here is envisaged.

 

Chilean singer Juga, who specialises in chess-themed songs, sang her first chess song, "Oh, Capablanca", at the closing ceremony of the Batumi Chess Olympiad of 2018, and the opening ceremony of this Candidates Tournament is to be regaled with the premiere of her new song, "Open Files".

Tie‑breaks

 

Play in each round starts at 15:00 CEST, which appears to be 14:00 BST.  Live coverage is appearing on chess.com at https://www.chess.com/events/2022-fide-candidates-chess-tournament/games.

 

The time control is 120 minutes for the first 40 moves, followed by 60 minutes for the next 20 moves, and then 15 minutes for the rest of the game with an increment of 30 seconds per move starting from move 61.

 

Draws are not allowed before Black’s 40th move, except in the case of a draw by threefold repetition or by stalemate.

 

In the event of a tie for first place, there will be a play-off on the 5th of July.
