January 2020 ECF Grading List

The mid-season ECF Grading list, covering results played by the end of December 2020, was published on 29/012020.

The ECF Aug 2019 Grading List Extract on this website has been revised to show the Jan 2020 grades alongside the Aug 2019 grades (which are still those applicable to the Yorkshire league).  Also 62 players who had no standard grade in August 2019 but now have a January 2020 one have been added, and 16 players (all juniors) with neither standard grade nor rapidplay grade in August 2019 are now added with a January 2020 rapidplay grade.

Added players (who increase the number of players listed from 983 to 1108) fall into a number of categories, mainly the following:

1) new players arriving at universities,

2) players from Clay Cross (Derbyshire) which club has returned to the Sheffield league,

3) relatively infrequent players who were new to ECF grading last season and have now played enough ECF-graded games,

4) players from N. Yorks. clubs Richmond and Great Ayton, added as their players appear in our congresses sometimes, though they look to Cleveland and Durham for their league chess.

The January 2020 list was the first produced with some organisations’ data being extracted directly from ECF League Management System.  There were some hiccups which are probably still being sorted out.

Move to Monthly Grading

The plan was seemingly to progress hereafter to monthly grading lists using 4-digit numbers, initially on a trial basis.  The ECF will not require organisations such as leagues to report monthly if they do not want to, and it remains to be seen whether the process of sorting out problems and errors each month can keep up with such frequent data processing.

The Yorkshire and Harrogate leagues are now signed up to automatic data extraction.  That leaves the Bradford, Huddersfield and York leagues still having their data processed manually by me, and a cycle of monthly manual submissions could in time fall foul of holidays!

Bradford league results to the end of January have been submitted already.  Huddersfield had not entered any of their January results last time I looked.  York had only matches from 30th January outstanding and so seem to be on top of things.

No deadline for manual submission of data from games played up to 31st January, for a trial “February” list, has yet been received, but it is expected to be 14th February.  Nor has a date been received as to when the next “automatic” extraction run will take place, but it is likely to be about 7th February.  (LMS owners may have been advised for all I know.)  This all assumes there are no behind-the-scenes problems proving difficult to sort out.
