British Chess Championships 2020 to be in Torquay (again)

The original plan had been to hold the 2020 British Championships at a conference centre in Southport, Merseyside, but after a contract had been drawn up for signing, the conference centre decided it wanted to increase the cost to something which was unviable for the event.  By this time the “plan B” venue had already fallen through, so there was a hasty sounding out of other venues and the outcome was a decision to return to the 2019 venue, Torquay.  (Eastbourne was similarly used twice in succession, in 1990 and 1991.)

Due to the 2020 Olympiad starting on 1st August, the 2020 Championship event will start on 17th July to accommodate those playing in both events.  However, since for some juniors there is still one more week to the end of term, the event is being extended to the 31st July, and most of the junior events can be held in the second week.

The opportunity has been taken to add to the schedule more grade-limited events: U-170, U-150, U-130 and U-110 events which will be held in the second week.  This timing may detract from the attraction of these particular events.  (The U-180, U-160, U-140, U-120 and U-100 events will be alongside the other adult events in the first week.)

The schedule has already been published at https://www.britishchesschampionships.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/Schedule-2020.pdf
