Ackworth School to Receive BCET Award

The British Chess Education Trust (BCET) was set up with funds provided by twice British Chess Champion Sir George Thomas, who also won 21 assorted England badminton titles!  The English Unions, and the national organisations of Scotland and Wales, are annually invited to submit nominations for schools or junior clubs which have shown outstanding achievement or enthusiasm in chess activities.

Within the Northern Counties Chess Union, the option to put forward a nomination passes round the constituent counties in turn, and last time it was the turn of Yorkshire, who nominated Ackworth School, Ackworth, Pontefract.  On 02/07/2019, the secretary for the receipt of nominations, John Wickham, advised that the trustees had agreed to make an award to Ackworth School.

Prior to 1982, the award had been a shield; now it consists of a board with engraved plaque, a set of wooden pieces, and a digital clock.

The awards are prepared by Tournament School Chess Supplies, and Ackworth’s award is unlikely to be ready until September.
