Girls Chess Day on 17th November 2018


As part of a drive to promote chess for girls in Yorkshire, a Girls Chess Day is to be held on 17th November 2018, at Archbishop CE Junior School, Copmanthorpe Lane, Bishopthorpe, York YO23 2QT, from 9.30 am to 3.45 pm.  Lateefah Messam-Sparks and the newly appointed ECF Director for Women’s Chess, Chris Fegan, have been enrolled to assist.

There is a plan to send a 12-player team to the English Primary Schools’ Chess Associations Girls’ Under-11 Team Championship on 23rd March 2019 in Birmingham, and the team is to be selected in part on the basis of this event.


There is a proposed programme for the day (not necessarily final), which is as follows:



Registration and puzzles


Opening of event and introduction of Lateefah Messam-Sparks.

All girls to have a name sticker and we will ask them to introduce themselves: Name and School.

Organisers to hand out score-books and pens and badges.


Lateefah to use demonstration board and show 11-move game: Harriet Hunt v David Flower 1993, Caro Kann Opening.

All girls be helped to write game in their score book.


Short break.


Split into 3 groups as follows:

A - Beginners, Peter Cloudsdale & Steve Westmoreland;

B - More-advanced, Lateefah and Noel Stewart;

C - Advanced,Dan Staples and another helper.

All Groups look at Opening Principles.


Round 1-Swiss Competition.

Games scored except in Group A,

and maybe use clocks in groups B and C.


Round 2 of Competition.




Restart in Groups

Chess Tactics and Simple checkmates.
