British Chess Championships Day 11
Day 11 (04/08/2024) of the 2024 British Championships in Hull saw the final (9th) rounds of the British Championship proper and the Major Open, the final (7th) rounds of the Over 50 and the Over 65, and then a play-off for the British Championship. A table of final-round results appears here, and a table of final scores and placings appears here.
In the British Championship, two players were in the joint lead going into round 9 on 6½ out of 8: David Howell and Gawain Jones. In sole 3rd place with 6 out of 8 was Matthew Wadsworth. There followed ten players on 5½ including York’s Richard Palliser, all striving for a multiple share of second place (if there was a win on top board, otherwise a multiple share of third place) though possibly finishing as low as twelfth place depending on the outcome of boards 2 to 7.
Richard Palliser agreed a draw after 16 moves, so wasn’t striving for glory!
David Howell and Gawain Jones tied for first place on 7 out of 9 and proceeded to a play-off starting at 4.30 p.m. and consisting of 2 rapidplay games (20 minutes per game + 10-second increments), to be followed if necessary by 2 blitz games, to be followed if necessary by an “Armageddon” game. Things did not fire up at the appointed time on the “live” boards visible on the internet (either on Lichess or LiveChessCloud). 141 people were watching Lichess about 10 minutes after the advertised start (16.30}. Then, the two rapidplay boards appeared on Lichess at about 16.45, though game 2 soon disappeared leaving game 1 without any actual moves being made, then about 16.50 the moves started, with just over 200 people watching at that stage. (Well done somebody in the background!) Play-off results were:
Thus Gawain Jones won the British Championship which he had previously won in 2012 and 2017.
In the Major Open, the sole lead was still held by Lorenzo Fava now on 7½ out of 8. Since by now he was 1½ points ahead of the rest of the field he had in fact already won the Major Open! There followed 6 players on 6, including Harrogate’s Mate Ther, all with a chance of second place or second equal if they won.
In the Over 50, going into the final round Keith Arkell was in the lead on 5½ out of 6, followed by Stephen Dishman on 5, and then followed by nine on 4 including York’s Paul Townsend and Hull’s Andrei Ciuravin all nine with a chance of at least a share in second or third place if they won.
In the Over 65, in the lead going into round 7 were Craig Pritchett and Andrew Smith on 5 out of 6, followed by three players on 4½ out of 6 including Sheffield’s Chris Shephard. There followed ten players on 4 including Sheffield/Bawtry’s Jim Burnett and Scarborough’s Paul Hutchinson.
Yorkshire players’ pairings (with results and games to follow) were as follows: (To play through a game on screen, click on “play” and return to this screen by using the browser’s “back” function.)
