British Chess Championships Days 2 & 3

Day 2 (26/07/2024) of the 2024 British Championships in Hull saw the first 6 rounds of the 9-round Junior Rapidplay events with 5 age-limited sections: Under -16, Under -14. Under-12, Under-10 and Under-8, with the remaining 2 rounds to take place of the morning of day 3.  Additionally, the evening saw the first round of the Weekend Congress, which is a traditional-style event like any weekend congress enabling avid congress-players who can’t get the necessary time off work to play in a weekday event.  Rounds 2 & 3 were scheduled for day 3 and rounds 4 & 5 for day 4.

Day 3 (27/07/2024) saw the concluding 2 rounds of the Junior Rapidplay events wherein the best results from Yorkshire players were as follows.

Srivathsan Sasikumar of Leeds Junior CC finishing 8th-9th= out of 60 in the Under-12 Rapidplay,

Adamjeet Singh of Leeds Junior CC finishing 6th-16th= out of 46 in the Under-10 Rapidplay,

Amandeep Singh of Leeds Junior CC finishing 6th-9th=-3rd= out of 29 in the Under-8 Rapidplay.

Day 3 also saw the start of the main open-age standard-rate events: the British Championship proper with 86 participants playing 9 rounds, and the Major Open with 122 participants playing 9 rounds.

In round 1 of the British, the most interesting game, perhaps, was Gawain Jones’s win.  He played the Benko Gambit, though with … Be7 rather than a king’s fianchetto (reserving the possibility of the bishop entering the fray via f6 or b4), and recaptured White’ c-pawn which had eaten its way to a6 with the rook on a8, thus offering an exchange sacrifice in return for the White king being trapped in the centre or having to castle into a Black attack by castling on the queen’s side.  White declined the sacrifice at first, but then accepted it, castled on the queen’s side, whereafter Black attacked the White king and won.  To play through the game on screen, click on the link below, using the browsers “back” function to return to this page.
