Postscript to Chessable White Rose 2023-24 4NCL Season

Following on from the final results of this season’s 4NCL and with special reference to Chessable White Rose 2 who got relegated, Rupert Jones makes the following points.

Just a few days before the season they changed the rules relating to second teams in the same division which made things very difficult.  Basically, they now have to be totally different squads and if we had known this last May we would have taken voluntary relegation for the 2nd team.

The 2nd team have been magnificent in Division 1, for example last season their 4½-3½ loss to Manx Liberty which should have been better, and likewise to one of the Wood Green teams.

Also, special mention for Sam Chow on his 9-round IM norm.  He was +5 against Rasmus Svane but took the draw.

One might also mention how unlucky Paul Townsend was, as mentioned in the Guardian chess column of 10/11/2024, being so close to drawing with Shirov.
