4NCL 2023-24, Rounds 7 & 8, 2nd Leg

Rounds 7 and 8 of the 2023-24 4NCL competitions were split across two dates, starting with Division 3 Bishops and Division 4 playing on 9th and 10th of March 2024 at the Delta Hotels by Marriott in Warwick, with the other sections playing on the following weekend at Mercure Telford Centre Hotel.  The Yorkshire-based teams in action at Telford were Chessable White Rose teams 1 & 2 in Division 1 and Hull & East Riding Tigers in Division 3 Knights.

Round 7

Chessable White Rose 1, placed 8th out of 12 teams in their section after round 6, was confronted by Blackthorne who after 6 rounds were placed 7th in the table.  CWR1 had an average rating just 30 points higher than that of Blackthorne, so the match was likely to be close.  The first reported results were wins for CWR1 on boards 6 & 7, the first a pleasing (to the writer) win for the estimable Alekhine’s Defence and the second what turned into a suicide mission by the Blackthorn player.  Such an initial lead can make it easier for other players in the team to decide whether to take a draw or press (and possibly dangerously over-press) for a win.  There followed (order unclear) a draw on board 3 and a win for CWR1 on board. Around the same time came a draw for CWR1 on board 8.  The score of 4-1 meant CWR1 had at least drawn the match. Next Blackthorne won on board 5, but CWR1 were better off in both remaining games (boards 1 & 2).  Board 2 was drawn, ensuring a win for CWR1, and a CWR1 win on board 1 made it more decisive.

Meanwhile, 10th-placed CWR2 faced current leaders Wood Green, so damage limitation was perhaps the best to hope for.  The first game to finish was a 16-move draw on board 2, so a whitewash was averted!  Some time later there followed a draw on board 7.  Next reported was a win for Wood Green on board 1, and sometime later losses for CWR2 on boards 3 and 8.  CWR2 then needed to win the remaining three games in order to draw the match.  Alan Walton winning meant CWR2 kept that idea alive, but realistically Wood Green would get at least another half a point.  Wood Green’s board 4 then blundered in time trouble leaving the score at 4-3 to Wood Green.  CWR2’s resistance on board 5 was finally crushed and so Woodgreen won 5-3, which was a creditable CWR2 performance given the stature of the opposition.

Hull & East Riding Tigers, placed 7th out of 12 in Division 3K after 6 rounds, faced 9th-placed MK Phoenix, where “MK” stands for Milton Keynes.  Unfortunately, HERT were a player short, so they started a penalty game-point down besides the point on the defaulted board, i.e. with a starting scoreline of -1 to +1 instead of 0-0.  The task was not impossible, but would be difficult.  A win by captain Vleeshhouwer brought the HEERT score up to zero but meanwhile the opposition won on boards 1 & 2 meaning Milton Keynes would win irrespective of the results of the two remaining games!  A win on board 5 pushed the HERT score to 1, then a win on board 6 for HERT made the final score 3-2 to MK Phoenix.

Round 8

Chessable White Rose 1, now 2 places higher at 7th out of 12, were paired against Barnet Knights A, who were now in 9th place and who drew with CWR2 in round 2.  CWR1 board 1 sacked a knight for two pawns at move 16 (a blunder?) and went on to lose.  After the first six results were reported, the score was 3-3 with the bottom two results left outstanding and these seemed to be drifting towards a win and a draw respectively for the CWR players, so a won match looked on the cards.  Indeed, a win came on board 7, ensuring at least a drawn match, but by this time a CWR win on bottom board seemed to be in the offing, and that game too was won by CWT giving a 5-3 winning score for CWR1.

Chessable White Rose 2, still in 9th place despite having lost in round 7, were paired against Cheddleton in 5th place.  By the time six results had been reported on the website, Cheddleton had notched up a winning 4½ to 1½ point lead, so the remaining two games on boards 3 & 7 were for personal honour only.

Hull & East Riding Tigers, now 10th out of 12 teams after 7 rounds, were paired against Celtic Tigers 2 in 6th place, and HERT once again were a board short.  The score went to 2½-1½ to HERT with Douglas Vleeshhouwer’s being the only unreported game and that eventually was drawn meaning HERT won 3-2 despite the default penalty.
