4NCL 2023-24, Rounds 5 & 6

The third weekend of the 2023-24 4NCL competitions saw all sections playing on the same date, 10th & 12th of January 2024 at Mercure Telford Centre Hotel, featuring Divisions 1, 2 and 3 Bishops, and Delta Hotels by Marriott Warwick, featuring Division 4 and Division 3 Knights.  That meant all 4 Yorkshire-based teams were in action at the same time, but not all in the same place.

In round 5, Chessable White Rose 1 was confronted by the team called Alba, which is Gaelic for Scotland, and in Gaelic is pronounced as “Alapa” would be in English (IPA [aʎəpə]), with the stress on the first syllable.  There were not many wins from the Yorkshire teams.

There is a general theory that it is usually advantageous to double ones rooks on the seventh rank, but a more general version of this might be that it is usually advantageous to double ones rooks on the rank in front of the opposing king.  The following game illustrates this.  Click on the link to play through the game on screen.  (Use browser “back” function to return to this page.)

Richard Palliser 1-0 Roderick McKay

Another win was a more drawn-out affair in the form of a rook and pawn ending.  Click on the link to play through the game on screen.  (Use browser “back” function to return to this page.)

Sheng Liang Bernard Chan 1-0 Borna Derakhshani

An ending with K + N + 3P versus K + 5P was even more drawn-out.  The player with the extra pawns needed a win to draw the match, but could not find a way.  The player with the knight gradually got shorter and shorter of time.  Click on the link to play through the game on screen.  (Use browser “back” function to return to this page.)

Rishi Vijayakumar ˝-˝ Max N Turner

In division 3K, Maksym Larchikov went for two minor pieces for a rook, and after much pussy-footing around in the middle-game engineered a mating net with R, B and knight working together.  Click on the link to play through the game on screen.

Giampiero Amato 0-1 Maksym Larchikov.

In round 6, Chessable White Rose 1 adopted the strategy of promoting the two IMs above the 3 GMs.  Richard Palliser adopted a variation (4.f3) which the webmaster has been playing for about 55 years.  The Benko-style response seems like Black’s best option, but in the writer’s experience 7. Be3 is preferable to the move played in the game (7. Bd2).  The webmaster hoped to learn something useful; sadly, he didn’t!  I hope Richard does not mind me showing the game here!  Click on the link.

Richard J D Palliser 0-1 Peter T Roberson.

CWR1 scored only one win.  Click on the link to play through the game.

Max N Turner 1-0 Ameet K Ghasi.

CWR2 fared better, with the following two wins which with the five draws won the match.  Click on the links.

William Claridge-Hansen 0-1 Samuel Chow,

Jan Murawski 0-1 Sheng Liang Bernard Chan.

CWR3 fared very badly, notching up 5 losses.  Jim Burnett’s game was the last to be reported on the internet sources, but he had evidently lost very early and was first to finish.  Last to finish was evidently Alan Walton who was struggling to get a “result”, and he reports, “I personally was clearly better but one inaccurate move made my good (if not winning) position very tricky.”

Meanwhile, Hull & East Riding Tigers had reverse fortune with a 5˝-˝ win.  This included a relative brevity in the form of a 20-move demonstration by Mark Collinson of how to tip a load of bricks on the opposing king’s position, culminating in a position in which all his five remaining pieces (apart from his king) were working in concert.  Click on the link to play through the game.

Graham P Alcock 0-1 Mark I Collinson
