49th Inter-County (On-line Junior Blitz) Team “Battle”

An inter-county on-line junior team blitz competition (5 minutes per game + 3 second increment per move) was initiated on the lichess.org platform, seemingly around May 2020 (on 04/05/2020?), with two divisions, the organiser being Alex Holowczak (now ECF Director of Junior Chess & Education) though there seems no evidence of it being ever in any way run under the auspices of the ECF as such.  Its initiation would seem to have been a response to the curtailment of over-the-board chess due to the COVID epidemic.  Initially, it was held on the 1st and 3rd Mondays of the month but in time reduced to one event per month, on the 1st Monday of the month.

The number of teams involved varies from month to month.  Teams seem to be of 15 players, though some teams play with a lesser complement of players.  The competition seems not to involve direct clashes between two teams, but some sort of system more akin to the Jamboree system, though there is no reference to “rounds”.  No explanation of any organisational features is evident on or connected to the event’s webpage at https://lichess.org/tournament/lMcDaf7D.

The Yorkshire Junior Chess Association got involved for the first time in 45th event in the series, and has since been participating each month in Division 1, which in each event has had 8 teams, with the following results:

The time limit is testing, leaving little time to work out complications.  In this context, two games which looked well-played by the Yorkshire players were as follows.  (Click on the link to play through on screen.)

Obviously not all 152 have been played through, so there could be some miss gems!

The scoring system seems not to be specified, but a player scores “tournament points” for each game (possibly based on an inbuilt rating system), and the team’s final score is the sum of its players’ such tournament scores in the event.  In the 49th event, played on 01/01/2024, teams’ total scores were as follows:
