Yorkshire at the World 65+ Championship

The 30th World Senior Chess Championships, with 50+ and 65+ categories, were held from 15th to 26th November 2022 in the Italian town of Assisi, whose best-known son over the years was perhaps Giovanni di Pietro di Bernardone, better known as St Francis of said town.

There were 148 participants in the 50+, of whom 6 were attributed to England, but none apparently from Yorkshire.  There were 192 participants in the 65+, of whom 9 were from England, and 2 more specifically from Yorkshire, those 2 being Paul Hutchinson of Scarborough and Michael Stokes of Harrogate.

England’s John Nunn, the only FIDE Grandmaster in the line-up, scored 9 points from the 11 rounds and won the event, while Messrs. Hutchinson and Stokes scored a creditable 6˝ each out of 11, finishing 41st and 55th respectively after application of tie-breaks.

Paul Hutchinson was accompanied at the event by another of the Scunthorpe-Hutchinson diaspora, namely brother Norman, who now lives in Cambridge or thereabouts.

Final scores and placings of the 9 England 65+ participants were as per the following table.
