01/03/2020 Four Nations Chess League, Divisions 1 &2, Rounds 1 & 2
This weekend was for the 1st and 2nd rounds, as they would have been, of Divisions 1 and 2, which should have been played on the weekend of 9th & 10th November 2019, which is when Division 3N played its first two rounds. The date was changed due to a potential clash with the European Club Cup. The venue was the Mercure Daventry Court Hotel and Spa, Sedgemoor Way, Daventry, NN11 0SG. Division 1 games were again broadcast live on chess24.com and the 4NCL website.
The White Rose 1st team met Oldham-based 3Cs 1 in round 1. “3Cs”, incidentally, stands for “The Children's Chess Club of Oldham”, with Oldham counting as Greater Manchester as opposed to Lancashire. There is nothing in Yorkshire remotely approaching 3Cs as a promoter of emerging young talent. That said, their team was out-graded on all boards but board 1. Most of the White Rose wins were attributable to opponents making material-losing unforced tactical errors which abruptly terminated the games. Bottom board Svetlana Sučikova’s win, however, was a battle to the end, with both players trying to win. (Click here to play through the game on screen.)
In round 2, however, the White Rose 1’s opponents were title-holders Guilford 1, which closely resembles the England team! The only win for the White Rose team was one which the 4NCL website result page recorded for them on board 2, due to a clerical error! Richard Palliser drew a short game in which his opponent opted for repetition. (Click here to play through the game on screen.) More entertaining and impressive, however, was Samuel Chow’s draw with Gawain Jones. (Click here to play through the game on screen.)
Meanwhile, the 2nd team met in round 1 Anglian Avengers, who out-graded them slightly on 5 of the 8 boards, but the Yorkshire team won more comfortably than might be expected. Then, in round 2, they had a similarly comfortable win.
First-named team in each match had White on 1, thereafter alternating colours down the team. Matches on the left were played on the Saturday, and those on the right on Sunday. Division 1a
