Report by David Mills

A bumper day of chess on 10th June when Yorkshire faced Nottinghamshire at both under 160 and under 140 level in semi-finals of the English Chess Federation County Championships. Attempts were made to hold these fixtures at the York Railway Institute, but there was room for just one 16 board match. In order to keep expenditure to a reasonable level, I accepted Rupert Jones’ suggestion that both be played at the Methodist Church Hall, Main Street, Pool in Wharfedale.

Two rooms were in use and Rupert Jones and I jointly prepared a buffet for the gathering. The English Chess Federation appointed Brian Towers of Sunderland as arbiter for both matches. A time control of 35 moves in 1Ύ hours plus 30 minutes was agreed. I lost the toss for colours in respect of the under 140 team, so Nottinghamshire chose to have white on the odd numbered boards.

As can be seen from the match result, our opponents enjoyed an average grade advantage of 5 points per board – not huge, but likely to influence the outcome in a tight contest. Yorkshire was in contention for most of the time, however, in the last hour a Nottinghamshire victory became more likely and even if the match had ended in a draw, they would have progressed on board count.

Losing by the narrowest of margins was no disgrace but disappointing, having regard to the work put in by the players on the day and me as organiser/captain. Initial thoughts regarding 2017-2018 are that I am willing to captain the team again and recommend that efforts be made to recruit a captain to organise an under 120 grade team. Despite the performances on the lower boards in this and earlier fixtures by team members graded under 120, we realistically need the lower boards filled by players graded above 120 to make a serious challenge for the championship. In 2016-2017 the lower boards over achieved and this cannot be expected every season. I believe that players such as Dale Cullum, Stephen Forbes and Steve Harrington would form the basis of a strong under 120 team. 12 board matches are the norm in that category and a county the size of Yorkshire should be more than able to recruit a pool of players to field such a team. I would captain it myself, were I not already heavily committed in terms of chess captaincy and administrative duties.

I liaise with Rupert Jones in his capacity as under 160 grade team captain regarding players available for selection and have also played in that team for several years. A group of captains feeding players between teams as their grades fluctuate would benefit all concerned. One factor that should not be overlooked concerns the responsibilities of team captains, especially in home fixtures. It is very difficult to undertake the relevant match captain’s duties and play in the team. The stance of many leagues in Yorkshire, whereby they decline to affiliate to the English Chess Federation only makes a testing job even worse. I hope that all Yorkshire League officers encourage affiliated members to take out English Chess Federation membership to at least bronze level. Hull and District Chess Association took this progressive step at its Annual General Meeting on 13th June. Match captains have enough to deal with without having to ensure that their players are English Chess Federation members when participating in the national stages of county competitions.
