Report by David Mills

On Sunday 5th March 2017 under 140 grade teams representing Lancashire and Yorkshire assembled at the Bury Athenaeum Bridge Club to contest a Northern Counties Chess Union fixture. There has not been a Yorkshire team in this category for several years, however, it would appear that only the lack of a captain gave rise to this situation. Having been appointed captain at the 2016 Yorkshire Chess Association Annual General Meeting, I issued an e-mail to various club secretaries and players whose contact details appear in the 2016-2017 Yorkshire Chess Association Year Book requesting expressions of interest from qualified parties. Responses quickly appeared on my computer and in my telephone message minder service.

At the national stage of the counties event, teams comprise 16 players, but Lancashire opt to play just 12 boards in Northern Counties Chess Union fixtures. It is unfortunate that only Lancashire and Yorkshire enter teams at under 140 level in Union fixtures. Consequently, both proceed to the national knock out stages, irrespective of the result of this fixture. Other Unions quite rightly resent this state of affairs as their county teams might have to play 8 or 10 matches in the hope of qualifying for the knockout stages.

With 15 players available for the Yorkshire team at time of selection, I chose to attend as non-playing captain. One of the original twelve dropped out, so it was possible to accommodate the vast majority of those wishing to participate. Car sharing kept costs down and everyone arrived early, reducing the stress felt by their captain.

On winning the coin toss for choice of colours, Lancashire captain, David Almond, opted for white on the odd numbered boards. The home team enjoyed an overall grading advantage but not so great that Yorkshire had limited prospects of victory. A four-hour playing session was agreed, along with the Yorkshire League time control of 42 moves in 1Ύ hours plus 15 minutes. Play commenced just after 1.00 PM.

I was able to monitor the games throughout the match and at no point did either team look like registering an emphatic win. Lancashire always seemed slight favourites, although a draw or narrow Yorkshire victory were never out of the question until the final half hour. Eventually Lancashire secured a narrow 7-5 win. The result sheet indicates that we lost the match on the middle boards, despite outperforming our opponents on the top and bottom boards in terms of results and players achieving more than could have been expected.

In the quarter finals Yorkshire were drawn away to Hampshire with the option of playing at a neutral venue. With the increase to teams of 16 players, this meant several 130+ pool members might be available. My thanks to David Almond, who secured an excellent venue for this fixture and provided a fine choice of refreshments.
