1850: “Surrey Street Athenaeum” visited by “Norfolk Street Athenaeum” |
The Sheffield Athenaeum & Mechanics Institute Chess Club, Surrey Street, were visited by members of the Sheffield Athenaeum Chess Club, Norfolk Street, at the former club’s premises in Surrey Street, on Friday, 04/12/1850. The visit does not seem to have taken the form of a conventional “match”.
In an article about the Sheffield Athenaeum & Mechanics Institute Chess Club’s annual meeting, The Sheffield & Rotherham Independent of 12/01/1850 reported as follows:
No results of specific games were given, and none of those present were named.
