1850: “Surrey Street Athenaeum” visited by “Norfolk Street Athenaeum”

The Sheffield Athenaeum & Mechanics Institute Chess Club, Surrey Street, were visited by members of the Sheffield Athenaeum Chess Club, Norfolk Street, at the former club’s premises in Surrey Street, on Friday, 04/12/1850.  The visit does not seem to have taken the form of a conventional “match”. In an article about the Sheffield Athenaeum & Mechanics Institute Chess Club’s annual meeting, The Sheffield & Rotherham Independent of 12/01/1850 reported as follows: On the 4th December, the members met those of the chess club of the Norfolk Street Athenaeum, and other noted players, and a number of games were ably contested.  The meeting was of so agreeable character, that it is hoped other réunions of the same kind may take place. No results of specific games were given, and none of those present were named.
