Hope Valley 5-Minute Tournament, 2021 – Entries Invited

Jonathan Arnott is organising the Hope Valley tournament for 2021 as an outdoor over-the board event, with necessary changes to the traditional format occasioned by the Covid pandemic.  On-line entry form has been set up at

(No closing date/time for entries seems to be given.)  Entries need to be made on line.

Date: Sunday 27/06/2021

Start time: 6.30pm, aiming to finish no later than 9.30pm as the venue closes at 10.

Time control: 5 minutes/game

Venue: We will be using a covered outdoor venue which is relatively quiet as far as outdoor venues go, but don't expect silence either. We have use of a dedicated courtyard area outside the Saw Grinders Union cafe, Globe Works, Penistone Road, Sheffield, S6 3AE. The venue is licensed, primarily an eating place rather than drinking, but serves craft beers, cocktails etc.

Entry fee: £5, of which 70%-80% to be distributed as prize money and 20%-30% to cover hand sanitiser, disinfectant, card fees due to payment in advance so we know exact numbers, etc.

Maximum capacity: 30

Covid restrictions: Our aim is to be reasonable and respectful. Chess has a wide variety of ages/health status/vaccination status, views about Covid, etc.

Please either wear a mask at the board when in close contact with an opponent, or take a free home Covid test before arriving, or both. Please sanitise the pieces and the clock once you have finished your game. Please be respectful of people's personal space.

Chess at Kelham Island

As already advertised on the website (at q.v.), Geoff Brown has announced details of the thirdd session of “Chess at Kelham Island” outdoor individual over-the-board competitions, taking place on Sunday, 20/06/2021 at the same four venues as before.  Geoff advises (17/06/2021), “There are a few places left for this month’s event at Kelham Island which is this Sunday. People can contact me for information.”

Mini U-1650 rating (U-130 grade) Standardplay Chess Tournament (Reminder)

As mentioned in the previous Newsletter and on the website, Jonathan Arnott is organising an over-the-board tournament for U-1650 rating (U-130 grade) or new/junior unrated players, with a connection to S&DCA member clubs (e.g. membership of a club, playing for a team in the league).  It aims to give beginners and juniors the chance to play some proper over-the-board chess before in-person leagues resume, and (assuming there are enough players entering who already have grades) it should help to get some grading data in the system for those who don't already have any.  There is also the aim to provide an introduction to over-the-board chess to new players who have taken up the game initially on line.
