Played at Carlisle, on Saturday, 10/04/1884, over 15 boards, 2 games per board (time permitting).
This was the 9th match undertaken by Hartwig Cassel’s Bradford Exchange Club, and was perhaps the most enterprising one yet. After winning this match the team had notched up 8 wins and 1 draw.
The Cumberland Chess Association drew its players for this match from the Carlisle, Whitehaven, Maryport, Workington, Cockermouth and St. Bees Chess Clubs. The fifteen Bradford players were accompanied by H. Price, honorary secretary of the club, and W. Clarkson, who went as a reserve player.
Play started at 3.15 p.m., continuing through to 6.30 p.m. Hartwig Cassel, Bradford Exchange Club president, and Mr. Bellman, of the Cumberland Chess Association, were to act as adjudicators, though there was no mention of which, if any, games remained unfinished at the calling of “time”.
The match was reported in the Leeds Mercury of 17/05/1884 and in Sheffield & Rotherham Independent of 24/05/1884, as follows:
