National Rating Bar-Chart

A bar-chart of numbers of Yorkshire players against August ECF rating appeared here yesterday, so it seemed an appropriate moment to look at the overall ECF rating database content for comparison.  In yesteryear, grades for players of equal strength could vary noticeably from league to league and from region to region.  So, is that still the case?

Looking at the overall content of the ECF rating database, we find the modal (commonest) rating is 1607 ( = 120½ grade), exactly as in the Yorkshire extract, suggesting regional variation is no longer a feature of the system.  This will partly be because of the increase in congresses over 50 years, and also the 4NCL, have increased the geographical mixing of opponents.

The median rating (one in the middle) is 1585 ( = 118 grade) as compared with 1557 ( = 114 grade) in the Yorkshire list.

The arithmetic mean (“average”) is 1583 ( = 118 grade) as compared with 1549 (= grade 113) in the Yorkshire list.  The proximity of the arithmetic mean to the median suggests the national bar-chart is slightly more symmetrical than the Yorkshire one, though both tail off slightly more slowly towards the lower end than towards the higher end.
