Distribution Bar Chart
In the days of
3-digit grades, the most frequently occurring grades were clustered around
the 120 mark. In other words, a graph of some sort showing grade versus
number of people on that grade peaked around the 120-ish mark, trailing off
either side for higher or lower grades.
So, how does the
present-day distribution of 4-digit ratings match up to the old distribution
of 3-digit grades?
Looking at the Yorkshire
extract from the ECF August 1st rating list, it turns out that the modal
rating (the one which occurs most often) is 1607. If we
apply the prescribed rating-to-grade conversion formula to that modal 1607 we
get 121½. This is so close to 120 that it rather confirms the
validity of the conversion formula, at least at the modal area of the rating
range. Of course, the efficacy of the conversion may lessen as you move
higher or lower in the rating range.
Below is an analysis
of Yorkshire players in the ECF August 1st rating list in the form of a
sideways bar chart of number of players (horizontally) against standard-rate
rating band (vertically). Allocation of players to 40-point rating
bands for this purpose helps smooth the outline as well as keeping the size
of the chart manageable.
That modal rating of
1607 falls in the 1580 to 1619 rating band which forms the sideways “peak” of
the “graph”. 9 people have a 1607 rating, and 7 have the “round” 1600
rating which can reasonably be seen as representing the “average” (modal)
player’s rating. The median rating (one in the middle if they
are all lined up in order) is 1817 (= grade 149) which,
curiously, falls in the 1780-to-1819 band, which is more populated than the
surrounding bands, fuelling speculation as to why that erratic result
occurs. The “average” obtained by adding all ratings and dividing by
the number of players, more properly termed arithmetic mean. which is 1549
(= grade 113). This would be consistent with a balanced distribution
either side of the 1600-ish peak, and is therefore consistent with the distribution
following the pattern of a Normal Distribution Curve, which is visually evident
of course..
An equivalent chart
excluding the 693 less-accurate “P” ratings has the same basic shape despite
the reduced sample. The following includes “P” ratings, and the size of
the sample is 3,197.
