Yorkshire Extract of April ECF Ratings

For the first time since the start of the 2022-23 season, the number of players in the Yorkshire extract has fallen, from 3098 in March 2023 to 3006 in April.  The main reason for this is that there have now been 36 months since leagues terminated prematurely in March 2020 due to COVID, which in turn means those who have not since returned to rated chess-playing have gone 36 months without playing rated chess and so cease to have a rating.

If they resume playing rated chess, they will be treated in effect as “new” players, with results processed using the P method, though including as the stabilising “dummy” result a dummy draw against an opponent with rating equal to the returning player’s last full rating (if that is higher than the dummy rating for genuinely new players: 1800 for those aged 18 years +, or else age x 100 for those under 18 years, both less 100 for Rapid and Blitz time controls).
