Yorkshire U-1450s “Thank You”

from Steve Westmoreland

Yorkshire U-1450 captain Steve Westmoreland sent the following “thank you” to players and helpers at the match on 14th of May, and has asked that it be put on this website:

Dear all,

A thanks from me to all players, parents and supporters for the Yorkshire u1450s team. It was great to meet you all but sadly our journey into the England County Championship has ended to defeat against Essex. It was something of a frantic day, especially when we walked into a room lacking in tables, with bulbs missing from lighting and music equipment scattered all over.

We will be back next year and be in touch to raise teams. I suspect we are losing Anjelica, Brendan and Sean to the u1650s (Dave - I thoroughly recommend them and Amelia).

For all the juniors, please keep on playing and learning your endgames especially. Games tended to fall away as pieces came off and we had a number of matches with the advantage. However, you made us all immensely proud in the way you played and conducted yourselves against seasoned adults. It is a great sign for the future of Yorkshire chess.

Please be knocking on your coaching and club captain's doors to play more standard play matches. Tell them I said so (they are CC'd this message!) and hope to see many of you in the Silver Rook or IM Brown Saturday League from September.

On a personal note, it was fantastic to see so many juniors playing for a long time and concentrating. Especially in that heat and close conditions. Congratulations to Jacob and Max in particular, who played for around 4 hours and concentrated well.

I have been asked to write an article for the ECF magazine on this team, as it was very junior heavy. Please can I have permission to use pictures from parents?

Hope to see you all again soon, over the board or at competitions.

Kind regards,

Steve Westmoreland

Steve has since commented, “Conditions were hot and cramped and the juniors did amazing considering the length of play and ages. We have a great platform to now build on, with all the kids enthusiastic.”
