Yorkshire players’ round-4 results in the 9-round British Championship proper were as in the rolling result table below.

IM Andrew Ledger had a difficult time in and after the opening against a 16-year-old FM who outrated him!  Fortunately, Andrew knows when and how to grovel and made a comeback which left him a nominal pawn up, with his opponent having nothing better than acquiescing to a draw.

Eric Gardiner was playing Yorkshire-born Chris Beaumont (“Chalky” Beaumont) who 40 years or more ago played for Barnsley.  Eric went two pawns down, and then embarrassingly managed to trap a knight so that he either lost the knight - or got mated!

Bernard Chan was a pawn up in a R + opposite-coloured bishop ending.  After some dithering on both sides, appropriate redeployment of his rook via the g-file brought hope a win.

Peter Shaw was up against current NCCU Champion Virgil Szekely and ended up having to hold back his opponent’s passed pawn two squares from queening whilst guarding his own pawns.  The uneasy impasse was agreed a draw.
