2nd Ilkley Chess Festival

The Chess Centre (Ilkley) organised its first Chess Festival from 16th to 18th September, at the King's Hall & Winter Garden, Station Road, Ilkley, with four sections attracting a total of 161 participants. This year’s event took place from 17th to 18th June, at Ilkley Grammar School, Cowpasture Rd, Ilkley, LS29 8TR. The Grammar School (now actually a comprehensive academy) is not far from the Craiglands Hotel where the British Rapidplay has been held in the past.

This year’s event was somewhat slimmed down as compared with the previous edition, three days down to two, four sections down to three, and prize fund reduced. In 2022 there had been 161 participants, but this time entrants were stated as limited to 80, though in the prior week entries were advertised as totalling 86 after closure of entries. It will be interesting to see whether Sheffield’s congress which is being revived in October 2023 and for the first time is also going for the 2-day format (rather than 3-day), has been over-optimistically budgeted, as perhaps Ilkley’s first event may have been.

Advertised prizes in each section this time were 1st £150, 2nd £125 and 3rd £100, with unspecified grading prizes dependant on entries.
