UK Chess Challenge Megafinal, York
This was a
6-round rapidplay event (15 minutes per game + 10-second increment per move) held
on Sunday 11th June 2023 at Bootham School, 51 Bootham, York, YO30 7BU, under
the direction of John Hipshon.
There
were sections for Under 18, Under 14, Under 12, Under-11 (latter two combined),
Under-10, Under-9 (latter two combined), Under-8 and Under-7 (latter two
combined) sections. First-placed boy and girl in each age category were
awarded the titles “Supremo” and “Suprema” respectively, according to the
standard UKCC practice, they being as follows:

Gigafinals, those so qualifying being indicated by “Q” in the rightmost
column below. The Northern Gigafinal is scheduled for 1st & 2nd
July at Wright Robinson College, Abbey Hey Lane, Gorton, Manchester.
The
following result table is an adaption of the results as published on the YJCA
website. First, second and third places were determined were necessary
by tie-break (first Buchholz, then Median-Buchholz if necessary). The
absence of girls in the two older sections supports the idea that girls tend
to drop out of chess after reaching secondary school.
