4NCL Rounds 9 to 11

The long Bank Holiday weekend of Saturday 29th April to Bank Holiday Monday 1st May 2023 saw the 4NCL’s final three rounds, 9 to 11, played at the same time in parallel at two venues, with Divisions 1, 2, and 3 East playing at the Kents Hill Park Training & Conference Centre, Milton Keynes, Bucks., and Division 3 West and 4 playing at Delta Hotels, Warwick.

Preparations for this season’s 4NCL experienced difficulties in arranging venues, and further difficulties are expected for arranging 2023-24 season’s venues.  Increasing costs are expected to increase team entry fees, which might reduce entries.  4NCL needs to be confident that they will get at least 64 entries for next season, so they are requesting “Expressions of Interest” in entering teams for 2023-24 by as early as 5th May 2023.  There were 83 entries in 2022-23, so one might expect the 64 minimum to be achieved.

The main cause of excitement on the Saturday, for the inhabitants of Milton Keynes at least but also those of the north-west of the former People’s Republic of South Yorkshire, was the Milton Keynes versus Barnsley football match (a 4-4 draw as it turned out), the point here being that “Milton Keynes Dons” are fighting to avoid relegation into the Slough of Despond sometimes referred to as League Division 2 (actually hierarchically the fourth division).

For chess-players, the main item of interest should have been the 14th game in the World Chess Championship match between Ian Nepomniachtchi and Ding Liren, which was crucial in that it was the last of the standard-rate games.  That potentially exciting game was also drawn, leaving the score at 7 points each, necessitating a “penalty shoot-out” in the form of speed chess play-off games on the Sunday.

Also, in case you missed it, at the level of the 6-Nations’ League, England’s women’s rugby team, questionably titled “Red Roses” - surely “Red and White” would be more appropriate) - beat France to take the championship title.

Back to the 4NCL, two games were later (10/05/2023) added below, under the heading “comedy of errors”, both from round 10.

In round 9 (Saturday 29th) Hull & East Riding Tigers were first by far to finish their match, defeating Sussex Martlets 2 by 4 points to 2.  (The “martlet” is a heraldic bird akin to the real-life swifts and martins.  Six martlets form a heraldic symbol of Sussex, appearing on flags etc.)  Chessable White Rose 1 and 2 tried to copy Barnsley’s 4-4 example, but fell short, each losing 3½‑4½.  Hapless Chessable White Rose 3 started by defaulting a board (incurring a penalty game-point deduction) and went on to lose on the other 5.

In round 10, the main result in the earier stages was the defeat with Black by China’s Ding Liren of Ian Nepomniachtchi in the fourth game of the rapidplay play-off, earning Ding Liren the World Championship.  The first three play-off games were drawn.

At the 4NCL, Hull & East Riding Tigers had a reversal of fortunes, losing, which meant they were losing touch with any chance of winning their division.  White Rose 3 improved their performance, but still lost their match.  White Rose 1 and 2 both had close matches, both with players on either side probing for wins in theoretically drawn endings, or trying to draw theoretically lost endings, but nobody survived their theoretical deserts, and White Rose 2 drew their match, but White Rose 1 lost a crucial match which left Manx Liberty too far ahead to be caught in the last round.

In Round 11, White Rose 1 was playing to secure or share and place.  Manx Liberty started the round 4 match points ahead of the rest of the field, and hence could not be caught.  White Rose 2, being next to the bottom of the table, were playing to avoid the embarrassment of finishing bottom!  White Rose 3 started the round in 5th place out of 12, and so would be playing just to maximise their final placing.  Due to the odd number of teams in Division 3 East, Hull & East Riding Tigers had a bye, having already completed their matches, but being in equal 3rd-4th place and three match points ahead of the team in 5th place, they could just watch to see if they finished 3rd equal or 4th (depending on the final-round fate of Rhyfelwyr Essyllwg.

Board-by-board pairings for round 11 were as follow.  (Results to follow later.)  The first of the results below to appear was an early Speelman v Rowson draw.   Two-and-a-half hours after the start, the only further results to appear on the 4NCL website were a win by Bernard Chan over Robert Starley and win over Jude Shearsby by Jim Burnett (who thus avoided a long-weekend personal whitewash).  White Rose 1 reached 4-2, so needing a further half-point from the remaining two games, but despite best efforts, that was not to be.

White Rose 1 finished 2nd-3rd equal on match points, and 2nd if you go down to game points.

White Rose 2 finished 9th-10th equal (out of 12) on match points, or 9th including game points.

White Rose 3 finished 5th out of 12.

Hull & East Riding Tigers finished 3rd-4th equal on match points, or fourth including game points.
