4NCL Harrogate Congress 2023

at The Old Swan Harrogate, Swan Road, Harrogate, North Yorkshire, HG1 2SR

Entries were well up on last year, by 27% in fact, as can be seen from the following table:

The Open somewhat unexpectedly saw a 5-way tie for first place, and Paul Townsend of York and Joe Varley of Hull were among the 5.

Chris Bak of Bradford introduced a proverbial “fly in the ointment”, as far as highest-rated Keith Arkell’s possible hopes for a clear win were concerned, by drawing with Arkell in round 1. Conceding a 3rd-round draw to Louise Head was probably not part of the original Arkell tournament plan either.

Paul Townsend’s steady undefeated progress culminated in a 5th-round draw with the black pieces against 2nd-highest rated Nigel Davies, the two having been in the joint lead after 4 rounds. This game apparently ran as follows: 1. c4 e6 2. Nf3 Nf6 3. g3 d5 4. Bg2 Be7 5. O-O O-O 6. d4 ½-½. Joe Varley started with a loss to Tim Wall, but then managed 4 wins on the trot.

In contrast, there was a clear winner in both of the other two sections.
