06/11/2022 4NCL Rounds 1 & 2, Second Leg
Most Yorkshire-based teams played their first-weekend matches (rounds 1 & 2) on 22nd-23rd October (see here), but one team, Hull & East Riding Tigers playing in Division 3 East, were in action at the Mercure Daventry Court Hotel and Spa on 5th-6th November 2022.
In round 1, on the Saturday, ratings suggested H&ERT would be “comfortable” on the bottom four boards against Surbiton, but might be “tested” on the top two boards, Sure enough, the first four results to be recorded were three wins and a draw in the “comfortable” zone, ensuring a team win, with the top two boards still battling on. Then Surbiton turned in a win on board two, and finally a win on board 1 as well. First-round details were as follows:
In round 2, H&ERT faced none other than the Norfolk-based ancient British tribe which caused so much trouble for the Romans, more specifically Iceni 1. There is of course an analogous case for calling H&ERT the Parisii, after the tribe which back in Gaul gave its name to the French capital city, some of whom in the British Roman era occupied an area vaguely in and around the Holderness area of East Yorkshire; then we would have had the all-Brittonic pairing Iceni 1 v Parisii. On quoted team rating totals, Iceni 1 and H&ERT were virtually equal, differing by a single point, so the match was likely to be close.
The first result recorded was a draw on board 2. There followed two more draws and an important win for H&ERT at board 4, leaving them needing 50% from the remaining two games to win the match. After some time, a win for the Iceni at board 4 made it level again, leaving all hanging on board 3, where the game’s result was the last to be reported from the six 6-board matches being played. The delay began to suggest that maybe the game was the subject of a dispute - al had been overlooked by those entering the on-line results. Around 16:40, the game was reported as drawn, leaving the match result as follows:
