Ilkley Chess Festival

The Chess Centre (Ilkley) organised its first Chess Festival from 16th to 18th September, at the King's Hall & Winter Garden, Station Road, Ilkley, with four sections: Open, Major (<=2000 rating), Intermediate (<= 1750), Minor (<=1500), with in each section, respectively, 44, 54, 39 and 22 participants, after discounting two entrants who did not turn up and play, making 161 participants in all.

Advertised prizes in each section were 1st £300, 2nd £130 and 3rd £75, with grading prizes of £50.

The lowest section of congresses tends to be the one with the largest number of participants, so the Minor here being the smallest is relatively unusual, perhaps being due to a lower-than-average rating cut-off.

Among the Open participants was Huddersfield player of yesteryear, Rudy van Kemenade, whose cats used to collect small rodents from the grassy slope opposite the house and dump them on the garden path, meaning approaching the front door necessitated tiptoeing among the corpses. (Ask Chris Dossett if you don’t believe me.) Rudy has long been living and playing chess in Wales. Another interesting name is that of Tim Wickens, who has recently been living in Scotland, apparently at Fortrose on the Black Isle, and playing chess for Inverness. Presumably he is the Scottish Correspondence Chess IM Tim S. Wickens. He is also probably the Tim Wickens who played for Sheffield University in a Woodhouse Cup match against Sheffield c. 1967, losing to the writer.

Around 7 or 8 games were published live each round on Chess.com, not all being from the Open section. Rapidplay and/or Blitz tournaments were advertised as evening side events, though results are not to hand.

In the Major, two players entered the final round sharing the lead on 4 out of 4, a full point ahead of their nearest rivals, so a win for one would earn clear 1st place, but they drew and so shared the prize money involved.
