Northumbria Masters 2022

This event orchestrated by Tim Wall commenced on 26/08/2022 and runs on to 30/08/2022, and is being played at St Mary's Catholic School, Benton Park Road, Newcastle upon Tyne.  A number of Yorkshire players are participating, though mainly in the lesser events.  Identifying Yorkshire players can be difficult, and some may be missed.  Sections involved are as follows.  (Round-by-round results are being added progressively.)

Open, 67 competitors, with 9 rounds running the whole period of 26th to 30th.  Yorkshire participants and their scores in each round, were as follows.

GM Norm All-Play-All (10 players), with 9 rounds running the whole period of 26th to 30th.  There are no Yorkshire players participating.  The hope will be that some of the FMs participating, especially the juniors, might earn GM “norms”.  Similarly, it is hoped the IM Norm event generates IM norms.

The GM Norm event was won by IM Matthew Wadsworth with 6 points out of 9, so presumably he earned a GM norm.

IM Norm All-Play-All (10 players), with 9 rounds running the whole period of 26th to 30th.  There are no current Yorkshire players participating, though it is interesting to note the participation of the former Yorkshire-born, Castleford-resident, Leeds Woodhouse and Yorkshire County player IM Angus Dunnington, who drifted away from chess in favour of poker, but has been seen playing a little chess again in recent times in Scotland.  Angus has in the past played for 4NCL White Rose, his last appearance for that team being in 2005.  He now lives with wife Miotto (reportedly some kind of “princess” in her native country when they married!) in Scotland.  Another once-local player is former Sheffield University player IM Pete Large.

The IM Norm event was won jointly by CM Bao Nghia Dong of Vietnam and FM Daniel Fischer of Switzerland with 6˝ out of 9.  Angus Dunnington finished 6th-8th on 3˝.

Li Jiping was the highest-rated in the section.

Junior Rapidplay, with 5 rounds all played on 26/08/2022.  No Yorkshire players evident.

(The participant David Li, listed on chess-results.com in the Junior Rapidplay and in the Major/Minor as a member of St. Andrews Hull, is, as far as the webmaster knows, a player from the Bluecoat School, Liverpool - unless he has moved recently to Hull.)
