Finals of 1st EJCOA National Youth Championships

These were held from 8th to 10th July 2022, at Nottingham High School, Waverley Mount, Nottingham.

While approximately 27 Yorkshire juniors were doing battle in the 7-round UKCC Northern Gigafinal in Manchester (a rapid-play event), 3 Yorkshire juniors (unless any have been missed) were playing in the 5-round finals of the 1st “National Youth Championships” (standard-rate play) of the relatively recently formed English Junior Coaches and Organisers Association (no apostrophes - aka EJCOA), not to be confused with the 7-round British Junior Championships organised by the ECF in roughly the same age-limited sections.

Maksym Larchikov of Hull scored 4 out of 5 in the Under-14 event, finishing clear 1st in the section (out of 29), and

Hasana Garuda of Alwoodley scored 2 out of 5 in the Under-8 event, finishing 15th-19th= in the section (out of 25), and

Daniel Meredith of York scored 2 out of 5 in the Under-12 event, finishing 19th-28th= in the section (out of 33).

Any one section of the UKCC events lasts just one day, and that one-day 7-round rapid-play format seemingly is preferred by most to the EJCOA 3-day 5-round standard-rate event.  Older juniors may prefer to play any standard-rate chess in the form of (adult) weekend congresses or 4NCL, while younger juniors perhaps prefer the rapid-play format and perhaps prefer junior-only events.

Whereas UKCC has sperate boys’ and girls’ sections, EJCOA mixes boys and girls together in the same section.
