Delancey UK Chess Challenge Northern Megafinal Day 1: Under 8s and Under 10s The Northern Megafinal is being held on Saturday 9th July and Sunday 10th July, 2022, at Wright Robinson College, Abbey Hey Lane, Gorton, Manchester. The under 8s and under 10s play on the Saturday, and the under 12s, under 14s and under 18s play on the Sunday. Some age groups were split into two groups, each supplying qualifiers for the Terafinal (ultimate final) on 15-16th October at Blenheim Place. There are 7 rounds in each section. The playing schedule for each section is:
The time control is 15 minutes per game with 10 seconds added per move played.
There were 15 Yorkshire players in action on day 1, in the under 8s and under 10s, top 3 star performers being: Samiksha Yerabati who finished outright 1st with 7 out of 7 in the U-10 Girls, Maksym Kryshtafor who finished outright 1st with 6˝ out of 7 in the U-8A Boys, and Srivathsan Sasikumar who finished 1st-3rd= with 6 out of 7 in the U-10B Boys.
All (unless some have been missed) Yorkshire players’ final totals etc were as follows:
There were arguably a further 10 “Yorkshire” players in the U-8s and U-10s (and 3 in the U-14 and U12 age groups playing on Sunday). These are from Yarm School, which hosted a Teesside Megafinal this year in parallel with the one at York. This is a massive turnout from a single school. Yarm, then in the North Riding of Yorkshire, became part of newly created Cleveland in 1974, but in 1996 Cleveland was abolished under the Banham Review. Nevertheless, Cleveland Chess Association persisted as a county CA within the NCCU, and hence Yarm, now in North Yorkshire, is still in Cleveland for chess purposes.
