FIDE World Senior Team Championship 2022

 

This event was held at Acqui Terme, Piedmont, Italy, from 20th to 29th June 2022.  (“Terme” is Italian for “spa”, and the city is famous for its hot sulphur springs.)  There were 4 sections Over 50, Women’s Over 50, Over 65 and Women’s Over 65.  England was represented in the first three, winning each of those three sections entered!  There was not only one men’s team.  Members of the winning teams were:

It is not immediately evident what women’s teams there were in the Over 50s other than
England, but they achieved some good results against some men’s terams.  “USA 5 Brothers” (not the main USA team) was oddly named as there were only four of them: Krishan, Ramesh, Nafresh and Suresh Jhunjhnuwala.  Maybe a fifth brother was a non-playing reserve.

 

No current Yorkshire players were evident, though Nigel Povah is ex Leeds University, while Charlie Higgie on board 1 for Wales Cymru is ex Sheffield University, and of course Nigel Short learnt to play chess in Sheffield while his father was for a while employed there.
