South Lakes Congress

Barrow-in-Furness, 3rd to 5th June, 2022

The 24th South Lakes Congress attracted entrants not only from England but also from Wales, Scotland, the Isle of Man and the Irish Republic.  The event had a new venue, The Forum, 28 Duke Street, Barrow-In-Furness.  The entry form advertised the event as an ECF Grand Prix event, which strictly seems wrong as the post-Covid Grand Prix is not due to resume until July 2022, but in updating the previous version of an entry form for the next event can involve odd oversights.

The only Yorkshire-resident prize-winner appears to have been Tony Slinger of Leeds, who picked up £187.50 for finishing 1st-2nd= in the Major.  The Barrow-in-Furness CC website reports, “Andy and Maggie Butterworth were awarded a long service gift of a Cumbria crystal chess set, with flowers for Maggie.  Andy provides the equipment and the bookstall (Chess Direct) and is retiring soon.”

Here follows the prize list, and the results of Yorkshire participants (apologies to anyone missed).
