County Championship Quarter-Finals
Eight ¼-final matches
were played at various locations, mainly mid-points between the counties
concerned, over the weekend: seven on Saturday 14/05/2022, and one on Sunday
15/05/2022. Yorkshire was involved in three of these.
The Open team,
captained by Peter Ackley with Steve Westmoreland acting as captain at the
event, though not particularly strong by some standards, was surprisingly way
too strong for a Middlesex Open team of whose players only three were barred
by their ratings from the lower U-2050 section. Middlesex managed a win
on only 1 board. Yorkshire is now due to meet Greater Manchester in the
semi-finals on the 11th or 12th of June. See below for match details.

The U-1850 team,
captained by Rupert Jones, comfortably beat Norfolk, playing on a slightly
reduced number of boards. Norfolk managed to win on three boards, but
Yorkshire won on seven. Yorkshire is now due to meet Essex in the
semi-finals on the 11th or 12th of June. See below for match details.
The U-1450
team, captained by Steve Westmoreland, did not manage to emulate the
successes of the other two teams, losing to Essex. Nevertheless, this
provided good experience of adult national county chess for juniors who made

The U-2050 team is
due to play its quarter-final match against Essex on 21/05/2022, while the
U-1650 team has a bye straight through to the semi-finals.
