27/02/2022 OTB 4NCL 2021-22, Weekend 3, Rounds 5 & 6 27th-28th March
Division 3N had a “rest weekend” on this occasion, as it is an all-play-all between 8 teams, so requiring only 7 rounds, whereas the other Divisions are playing 9 rounds. Thus the only Yorkshire-based teams in action were Chessable White Rose 1 & 2 in Division 1/2. The venue was the Mercure Daventry Court Hotel. Results were as below.
In round 5, when Chessable White Rose 1 faced the formidable Wood Green, Gawain Jones sacrificed to expose Michael Adams’s king, but this led only to a draw. Nevertheless, this was probably something of a morale booster for the rest of the team. When James Adair sacrificed against Jon Speelman, who had allowed his king to get stranded on its home square, the sacrifice brought home the full point, and things looked as though an “upset” might be on the cards. However, Wood Green’s remaining boards won with White or drew with Black, and so ensured a win for Wood Green.
Chessable White Rose 2’s round 5 match was somewhat easier, with a win over Dublin-based team Gonzaga.
In round 6, Chessable White Rose 1, playing The Sharks 1, improved their score but still came second. Against West is Best 1, Chessable White Rose 2 had a one-point lead after seven games had finished, leaving Paul Townsend needing just a draw, from a position in which he was two pawns ahead, to win the match. In the event he won, making the lead two points.
It appears that a number of players, on resigning, perhaps after first picking up their king and symbolically rotating it through 90 degrees to indicated resignation, then deposit their king on a square to which it cannot move, causing the electronic chessboard, which is faithfully recording the moves, to record this last bogus move as though it were a move played in the game, faithfully outputting it to any downloaded pgn file for the game. Some such spurious moves remain in the games.
