World Championship Game 4

The fourth game between Magnus Carlsen and Yan Niepomniashchy was played on 30/11/2021.

Game 3 diverged from game 2 early, at move three, when Black opted for the Petroff Defence.  The game took about an hour to drift into a 33-move draw, with Carlsen delivering perpetual check.  To the “average” playr some moves may have seemed mystifying.  0. Why, for instance, did White not play 18.bxa6 and deny Black a passed pawn?  White will have looked at 30. d6 and concluded that it would get nowhere.  The possible continuation 30. … a2 31. Nf6+ Kg7 32. d7 seems somewhat unclear.  32. … Rb6 would allow 33. Rxa2.  So, the final may well be more complicated than is immediately obvious.
