28/11/2021 OTB 4NCL 2021-22,Weekend 1, Rounds 1 & 2 Division 1/2
The first weekend for Division 3, with its three regional sections, was held on 20th-21st November, but Division 1/2 started the following weekend, 27th-28th November. The event was held at Kents Hill Park, Milton Keynes. Timings of starts of rounds for these weekends are 2.00 p.m. for the Saturday round and 11.00 a.m. for the Sunday round. Two Yorkshire-based teams number among the Division 1/2 participants, Chessable White Rose 1 and 2.
It was expected Gawain Jones would be playing for Chessable White Rose this season, though he did not play in this match, and proved not to be needed as regards winning the match. Some of the Round 1 games were broadcast live, but that coverage did not extend to Chessable White Rose 2 (not on Lichess at least). In round 2, Gordon Scott showed on Lichess as playing 15. Qc2 (losing his queen) with a draw then being agreed! One suspects 15. Qd1 was the actual move played, which would be going along with a draw by repetition. The two early draws on boards 2 and 6 of the second team may well have been occasioned in part by the onset of snow around the country. (The aftermath of Storm Arwen was dropping big fluffy lumps in South Yorkshire at the time.) In round 2, the second team fell within scope of the 112 boards being shown “live” on Lichess and similar platfoms. Six draws and two wins enabled the second team to win its match. The first team was poised on 3-3 for a long time, with Richard Palliser trying to wi an opposite-coloured bishop endng and Samuel Chow trying to avoid losing while the exchange down. The latter lost making it 4-3 to Barbican 4NCL, and, though being two pawns up, the former did not seems to have a winning line, partly because his h-pawn had the wrong-colour queening square; in the end he had nothing better than forcing stalemate.
The following were the Round 1 and 2 results:
