European Team Championships, 2021, Round 9
In the final round, played on Sunday 21/11/2021, the England Open team faced Russia, both having 10 match points, and England Women, on 5 match points, were up-floated to face Switzerland who were on 6.
The Open team drew 2 games (Adams and Howell) and lost one (Haria), leaving Luke McShane playing a rook and pawn ending in which both sides looked to be going to queen a pawn, as in fact happened. Thereafter it became a potential race, each to promote a second pawn, but on such an open board a draw by perpetual check looked likely in the end, and a draw did indeed result.
England Women were again looking better than they had in the early stages. Katarzyna Toma and Zoe Varney both won, while Louise Head lost, leaving Shohreh Bayat needing just a draw to achieve their third team win, which draw she achieved.
This left the England Open team placed 11th to 15th out of 39 (13th on tie-break) on 10 game points, and the England Open team placed 22nd to 27th out of 31 (25th on tie-break) on 7 game points.
In the Open event, Ireland, Scotland and Wales finished 37th on 5 match points, 38th on 3 and 39th on 2 respectively. These three did not field ladies teams.
Ukraine and France, who didn’t actually meet in the competition, tied for first place in the Open with 14 match points, with the Ukraine winning on tie-break. In the Women’s event, Russia finished clear winners with 18 match points.
