European Team Championships, 2021, Round 7

In round 7, played 19/11/2021, England Open team played Romania, or Roumania as we used to called it.  Gawain Jones won on board 3, but Michael Adams came second on board one, while David Howell drew on board 4.  That left the match result hinging on what last-to-finish Luke McShane could manage with the black pieces, which turned out to be a draw.  Thus the team scored its 4th drawn march out of 7.

Meanwhile the England women’s team were playing Iceland.  Katarzyna Toma and Zoe Varney both chalked up wins, meaning at least a draw from one or other of the other two boards would secure a match win.  In the event the next result to come in was a win for Shohreh Bayat, then lastly Louise Head drew, giving the team its first match win,  3˝-˝.

Things at the top of the open section hotted up as Russia lost to the Ukraine, making the final outcome far from predictable; Azerbaijan and Ukraine were left 1st-2nd on 11 match points each, with Russia, Spain, Armenia, Poland, France and Serbia all on 10, with 2 rounds to go.  England lay 10th-16th on 8, with no realistic chance of a medal place.
