08/10/2021 British OTB Championship, 2021, Round 7
Round 7 was played on 08/10/2021.
In the Championship, in joint lead after 6 rounds were Andrew Ledger of Sheffield, Nicholas Pert, and Mark Hebden on 4½ points each. The top 4 pairings, with current scores in parentheses, were as follows:
Svetlana Sučikova and Robert Starley entered round 7 each with a score of 3 out of 6, and both faced stronger opponents.
Andrew Ledger, with White against Nicholas Pert, chugged along fairly steadily, and by move 42 things had reduced to R +N + 3P versus R + B + 3P, with all pawns on the same side of the board. White had the weakness of an isolated e-pawn, but the position looked as though a draw should ensue, and that was agreed at move 50. Svetlana Sučikova had Black against David Eggleston. White had more space in a Caro Kan, and Black looked somewhat cramped. Rarely is Na8 a good move for Black, but in this game it launched Black’s emergence into the wider world by facilitating the doubling of rooks on the c-file. White’s unwary exchange of pawns at move 37, when down on the clock, gave Black threats against White’s king which White failed to meet adequately, and White resigned after Black’s 39th move. Robert Starley had Black against Neil H Bradbury. He launched a king’s side attack, and 27. ... Nf4 led to the opening up of White’s king’s side, and by move 33 white pawns started to fall off the board. Queens came off at move 47, and White resigned at move 49. Once the other results eventually came in, it turned out that 5 (!) players were sharing the lead on 5 out of 7 points: Nicholas Pert, Andrew Ledger, Mark Hebden, Marcus Harvey and Danny Gormally.
