Round 10 >

European Individual Chess Championship 2021, Round 9

The top-board game between Vincent Keymer v Rauf Mamedov, two of the three players in the lead on 6½ out of 7, was another token gesture of a game, agreed drawn after Black’s 23rd move.  This allowed the third player on 6½, Russian Anton Demchenko, to assume the sole lead, on 7½ out of 9.

England players’ results were as follows:

Gawain Jones played a risky-looking game in which he bailed out of the king’s side with Ke8-d8 and Rh8-e8, making it look at a glance as though he has castled queen’s side, hoping to make something of a huddle of passed pawns at c5, d5 and d4, before White could batter down the black king’s defences.  Unfortunately things did not quite work out for Black, but it was an entertaining game to watch, and better than what has been occurring on board one over the last three rounds.  Click here to play through the game Felix Blohberger 1-0 Gawain Jones on screen.

Lorin D’Costa won, as did Edmund Player.
