Round 7 >

European Individual Chess Championship 2021, Round 6

There were numerous draws on the higher boards, but the top-board battle resulted in a win for Rauf Mamedov.  This win put him into the sole lead, on 5½ out of 6, though he is hard-pressed by a gaggle of players on 5 points.  Click here to play through the top-board game Maxime Lagarde 0-1 Rauf Mamedov.

Lorin D’Costa came unstuck in a complicated game, and so remains on 3 points.  Click here to play through the game Jorge Viterbo Ferreira 1-0 Lorin D’Costa.

Gawain Jones went into an ending with rooks and opposite-coloured bishops.  Relative strength of bishops tends to be assessed on the basis of the colour of the squares the pawns are on, but with rooks on the board another criterion is extent that bishop and rook can work together.  Whilst the ending in Mazur v Jones was quite interesting to watch, with Jones’s B + R working together better than those of his opponent, there never seemed a likelihood of anything but a draw resulting.  Click here to play through the game Stefan Mazur ½-½ Gawain Jones.
