01/08/2021 British On-Line Championship 2021, Round 3
Round 3 of the 2021 on-line British Chess Championships were played on 01/08/2021, producing some surprises and upsets.
Up and coming Yichen Han held GM Michael Adams to a draw, in a materially equal rook and pawn ending. GM Keith Arkell was held to a draw with K + R + P versus K + R by Paul Dargan. In both games the GM was 350 or 349 rating points (about 47 grading points) higher than the opponent. GM Bogdan Lalic similarly drew with a supposedly weaker player. Worse, GM Mark Hebden (2480 rating) lost his game to Frederick Gordon whose rating is given as 1759, which in grading terms is 92 points lower!
Meanwhile, Leeds University’s Robert Starley (2113 rating) strayed into a perpetual check from opponent Spencer Lawrence (1718 rating), the two differing in terms of grades by about 53 points.
