03/07/2021 OTB Under 1650 Mini Standardplay Chess Tournament 2nd & 3rd July, 2021, Sheffield
This was arguably the first over-the-board standard-rate congress in Yorkshire since lockdown stopped OTB chess. It was held at Spa View Community Church, Spa View Road, Birley Spa, Sheffield, S12 4HD, and was organised by Jonathan Arnott. The time limit was all moves in a game in 45 minutes, with a 15-second increment per move from move 1.
Covid mitigation measures were in place. Phill Beckett reported, “The venue would have accommodated over 100 under normal conditions, but was limited to about 40 on this occasion. Masks were compulsory except for a couple of exempt people. Evidence of a negative test was required. As arbiter I came clutching all of the above plus my double jab card. Players knew the situation and accepted it.”
Entrants were mainly local. George Swanson of Stannington was the winner, on 5 out of 5, with three players sharing 3th to 5th places, Stephen K Lee, Harry J Taylor and Jamie Wright. The full result chart is to be found on the Sheffield &DCA website here.
