Latest Rotherham Online Classical Event

(A report by Peter Catt)

Malaysian student Wei Jie Peong was an impressive winner of the inaugural South Yorkshire Rapidplay Online Open winning all eight games to finish well clear of the 66-strong field.

Peong, who is studying at Sheffield University and plays in the local league, produced some excellent chess despite the time limit of 15 mins + 10 secs-per-move increment, and was usually ahead on the clock in all his games.  He is now rated over 2500 on the Lichess rapidplay ratings.

In second place was one of Yorkshire's highest-rated over the board players Oskar Hackner *, on tie-break from Sheffield University lecturer Yang Guo, both with six and half points.

Chesterfield's Peter Ackley, York's Richard Allis and Sheffield's Kacper Mytnik filled the next three places, half a point behind.

For the game Wei Jie Peong 1-0 Peter Ackley in the 5th round, on Lichess, see https://lichess.org/ri3mFSQ8.

For the game Wei Jie Peong 1-0 Oskar Hackner in the 6th round, on Lichess, see https://lichess.org/lIVI8p3G.

* With the Candidates tournament due to resume at the weekend it is worth noting that Oskar Hackner played one of the Candidates tournament participants back in the 2014 World Youth Championships in South Africa.  Hackner drew Black against Russia's Kirill Alekseenko in the first round of the Under 18 tournament and was beaten in a hard fought French Defence.
